The line should then hold relatively steady throughout transit, remaining well below the critical 70–75% threshold above which mould, corrosion, and condensation become serious risks.

    • Steady decline then plateau below 60% RH: Strong result. Your desiccant was correctly specified and held conditions throughout the journey. The cargo was protected.
    • Decline followed by a gradual climb back upward: The desiccant was approaching saturation toward the end of the journey. The cargo may have been protected, but the margin was thin. For longer routes or heavier moisture loads, a higher-capacity product — or more units — should be considered next time.
    • Flat or rising line from the start: The desiccant had little effect, was incorrectly positioned, was deployed in insufficient quantity, or was already saturated before the journey began. This is a specification or deployment problem that needs to be corrected.
    • Sharp humidity spikes: These indicate external events — typically container doors being opened, or rapid temperature drops causing condensation. A strong spike followed by a recovery shows your desiccant responded and reabsorbed the excess moisture. A spike that does not recover signals the desiccant was overwhelmed at that point.

    The Temperature Graph: Understanding Why Humidity Behaved as It Did

    Temperature and humidity are inseparable. Warm air holds more moisture; as air cools, its relative humidity rises and condensation can form. Reading the temperature graph alongside the humidity graph reveals the cause-and-effect story of your shipment.

    If you see a humidity spike, look at the temperature trace at the same timestamp. If temperature dropped sharply just before the spike — for example when a ship entered colder waters, or when cargo was transferred to a cold-storage area — the spike is a predictable condensation response, not a desiccant failure. Without it, any claim that moisture conditions were maintained is simply an assertion. With it, you have evidence.

    If your logger was configured with humidity alarm thresholds, the report will flag each event where RH exceeded those limits — including when it occurred, how long it lasted, and how far conditions deviated. These alarm events are not failures in isolation; they are the moments where your desiccant was most heavily tested. Cross-reference the alarm timestamp with the shipping itinerary and you can often identify exactly which leg of the journey — which port, which carrier, which climate zone — is your highest risk point. That knowledge directly informs how you adjust your desiccant strategy for future shipments on that route.
